Americans Advance in Doubles

The reunited duo that competed in last year’s Nasdaq has earned their first “W” of the 2006 tournament. In two sets and in just under an hour, Andy Roddick and Robby Ginepri defeated Guillermo Coria and Luis Manrique on Stadium Court today 6-2, 7-5.

The first set was claimed by the Americans in a mere twenty minutes. Even though their serve was broken once, Andy and Robby evened the score and won two more break points. They hit 26 winners and one ace in the first set, and lead in first serve percentage at 71%. The heat from the sun was also coming from their racquets as they quickly swung into the second set.

The first set started out with Coria and Manrique taking the lead 2-0, but the Americans fought back to win the next four games in a row, taking the lead at 4-2. Even though the score was quickly evened at 4-4, Andy and Robby held serve to regain the lead and never looked back to take home the “W” at 7-5.

Andy and Robby closed the second set in 37 minutes, and also closed with very impressive stats. Four aces were fired and 65 winners were claimed. The American duo closed the match and will prepare for singles for tomorrow, but they’ll be back to face the winner of the Czech showdown, Cermak/Friedl (7) vs. Damm/Stepanek.
