Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova were among leading tennis players yesterday to welcome the introduction of Hawkeye to the sport in an attempt to make bad line-calls a thing of the past.
The ball-tracking system, which was pioneered via television coverage of cricket, is expected to all but eradicate disputed calls and the resulting John McEnroe-style tantrums at officialdom.
The technology, already used extensively by tennis television broadcasters, will be brought into play for the first time at the Nasdaq 100 Open in Miami this month, where both the men’s and women’s circuits stage arguably their most prestigious tournament after the four Grand Slam events. The US Open in August will become the first major to use the electronic system.
