Truly a crowd pleaser, Andy is making sure the Memphis fans get their money’s worth as he took them through another third set tie break thriller tonight. In the battle of the big servers, Andy came from a set behind to defeat Wayne Arthurs 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 7-6(2).

Arthurs who was in top serving form tonight - serving 33 aces in total - broke Andy early to take a 2-1 lead. Andy struggled to make an impact on the Australian’s serve until 4-3, when he was able to take advantage of two break points to level the set at 4-4. Both players continued to be dominant on serve pushing the set to a tie break. Arthur’s serve proved to be the stronger in the tie-break as he took a one set to love lead.

With both men continuing their serving exhibition, the second set looked inevitably like a tie break was in the cards. Arthurs pushed hard at 6-5 to break the American’s serve for the match, but Andy’s fighting spirit was much alive, as he held serve to force the breaker. In a dramatic twenty point tie break, Andy showed incredible mettle as he saved a match point before leveling the match on his second set point.

A serving great Goran Ivanisevic once said, “Why don’t we just go straight to the tie break?” This strategy would have worked well in this second round clash, as neither player was able to break serve in the third set. Andy saved his fans the drama they had endured in the second set, as he took control early, racing to a 4-2 lead. An Arthur’s double fault added to Andy’s lead. At 6-2, Andy had four match points. He only needed the one as he booked himself a place in the third round.
