Andy to Play Aussie, Arthurs

After defeating a player last night whom Andy described to be “like a brother” to him, Andy is set to face a near-stranger tonight. Andy Roddick and lefty, Wayne Arthurs (AUS) are scheduled to meet once again on-court tonight as the first match on Stadium Court not before 6:30pm at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis.

Andy and Arthurs have not played in nearly four years and have only met twice before on the Pro Tour. Once in 2001 whereAndy defeated him in Washington D.C. and in the opening round of the 2002 French Open where Arthurs got the win after a tough five-setter. They were playing in the same tournament last week in San Jose, but Arthurs lost to fellow countryman Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals and Andy to Scotsman Andy Murray in the semifinals.

Arthurs defeated Tomas Zib (CZE) in straight sets yesterday 6-4, 7-6(2). Arthurs, however, is better known for his doubles playing where he has taken home twelve titles in his 16 years on tour. Arthurs is over ten years Andy’s senior and his highest ATP Singles ranking was number 44. Andy and the Adelaide native will see eye-to-eye throughout the match, both standing six-feet-three-inches tall, though Andy’s lightening fast serves and forehand are unmatched weapons.

Here are more statistics on Arthurs:
Birthdate: 18-Mar-71
Birthplace: Adelaide, S.A., Australia
Residence: Melbourne, Australia
Height: 6′3′’ (190 cm)
Weight: 177 lbs (80 kg)
Plays: Left-handed
Turned Pro: 1990

The cold weather is leaving after today’s high of 46 degrees Fahrenheit with rain showers. The forecast is calling for 60 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny for the rest of the tournament. Good weather and good luck in round 2.
