Walking in Memphis

After a successful week in San Jose where he reached the semi finals, Andy is now moving on to Memphis, Tennessee. The Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and The Cellular South Cup begins on Monday and Andy is once again the number one seed.

As well as the excitement of the tournament, the participating players will no doubt also be pleased to have the chance to visit Memphis, the recognized home of Elvis Presley and the The Blues. Graceland, one of the many attractions in Memphis, is a very popular house tourist destination, second only to the White House in Washington DC.

Memphis is clearly a tournament Andy likes to play. He has played every year since
2001 and won the title in 2002 with victory over James Blake. Last year he reached the semi finals but was forced to withdraw with an injured ankle.

Although he did not win this third consecutive title in San Jose, Andy was pleased with the progress he made throughout the week, especially on his serve. “From where I started the week serving and where I served last weekend —there was a lot of progress made this week. I had to be in the 30’s as far as percentages last week. I don’t know what I was today (semi final vs. Murray), probably around 50, but I thought I made a lot of progress this week.”

Being the number one seed places Andy at the top half of the draw. In the first round he will face friend and former housemate, Mardy Fish who is on the comeback trail from wrist surgery. Others in Andy’s half of the draw are San Jose quarter finalist, Wayne Arthurs (AUS), Xavier Malisse (BEL), number eight seed and recent Delray Beach finalist, compatriot, Robby Ginepri, and number six seed Tommy Haas (GER) who is also number six in the ATP rankings.
