It was Kid’s Day a the SAP Open in San Jose and Andy, appropriately so, was ready to play. With color back in his face and shirt, Andy appeared fully recovered from last week’s illness, decisively earning his place in tomorrow’s semi-finals 6-3, 6-2.
Andy began the quarterfinal match on serve, easily taking the first game at 40-15. Phau countered with a hold to level the match. Going through the motions, the pair held serve to 2 all. After a quick hold for 3-2, Andy broke Phau to widen his lead. Unwilling to trade breaks, Andy held for a 5-2. The German fought to narrow Andy’s lead to 3-5. In a suspenseful ad game, Andy served out the first set 6-3.
Phau opened the second set a little over a half an hour into the match. Not eager to repeat Wednesday’s marathon matches, Andy immediately broke and held serve for a commanding 2-0 lead. Despite glimpses of a three game deficit, Phau hung on for 1-2. The pair traded holds until Andy placed heavy pressure on Phau in the seventh game and broke for a convincing 5-2 lead. In true Roddick form, Andy served out the match 6-3, 6-2 earning a place in Saturday’s Semis.
Andy next faces teen sensation Andrew Murraym (GBR). Check back to Ar.com for a match preview and more of Andy in San Jose.
