Andy Breaks Great Dane

In front of a full house at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Andy took his home fans through a dramatic three set battle on route to the quarter finals. Andy defeated Denmark’s Kenneth Carlsen 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Andy took at early break in the first set to earn himself a 4-2 lead. Consolidating his break comfortably, Andy delighted the American fans by capturing the first set 6-3.

Kenneth Carlsen was not ready to play into Andy’s hands though, and worked hard to upset the American star. He broke Andy for a 3-1 lead. Andy then dug himself into an even bigger hole going down 15-40 at 4-1. It looked like last year’s champion would fight his way out of the game, but on his third break point, Carlsen secured the second break. Andy was left with a huge mountain to climb, but despite pressuring Carlsen as he served to level the match, he was unable to stop the Dane running away with the second set 6-1.

Thus, a third set battle commenced! Fans at the SAP Open had a chance to have their photo taken with Andy earlier in the week, and Andy needed their support in the final set. After holding his own serve, Andy upped the ante and took an early break from Carlsen for a 2-0 lead. More confident on his own service games now, Andy marched to a commanding 5-3 lead. Carlsen had one last attempt to salvage the match, pushing Andy to deuce. However on his second match point, the number one seed did not falter as he booked himself a quarter final clash with Germany’s Bjorn Phau.
