Roddick, Blake and Bryans to tackle Romania

U.S. Davis Cup Captain, Patrick McEnroe, has named his team to take on Romania
in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group 2006. Alongside USA’s number one, Andy Roddick, will be world number 20 James Blake and the Australian Open doubles champions, Bob and Mike Bryan.

The team that McEnroe has picked is certainly a seasoned and in shape team. Andy Roddick and James Blake both won titles prior to the Australian Open and the Bryan twins have just picked up their third Grand Slam title. It is with the confidence of these victories that the foursome will play Romania at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club (California) on the 10th-12th February.

After the USA’s disappointing first round exit last year, Patrick McEnroe is keen for his experienced side to get off to a good start this year. “Our guys are eager to bring the Davis Cup back to the U.S. I feel our chances to win this year are as good as anyone’s, but we are expecting a tough fight from the Romanian team. It is going to be a great atmosphere. The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club has done a first-class job transforming their facility for us.”

This tie will be Andy Roddick’s 13th Davis Cup tie winning 17 of his 26 matches. Andy is very passionate about helping the USA lift the Cup and his teammate, James Blake, believes this year could be their year. “This is such a strong team and hopefully we’ll go all the way this year. I think something Andy has always looked forward to in his career is winning a Davis Cup, and I’d love to be a part of that process. I do respect all those guys, and I’m happy to call them teammates any time I get a chance.”
