The Andy Roddick Foundation may be best known for its aid to children in South Florida and Texas. However, the work of Andy and his foundation spreads hope to all the corners of the globe.
This inspiration was highlighted in one young Australian, who tracked Andy through the Australian Open this year. Like so many tennis fans, he was riveted by Andy’s skill with a tennis racket but it was Andy’s off-court charity work that truly touched this Aussie.
Diagnosed with HIV in 1999, the young man struggled to cope with the implications of the disease. This was a result of ignorance and was not to last as the gutsy Aussie told us, “With the love and support and understanding of my family and friends, it’s made it a whole lot easier.”
Enter Andy Roddick. Andy has made a difference in so many children’s lives. The money raised by the Andy Roddick Foundation not only goes to children in need, but also towards finding cures for the diseases that afflict them. The impact of The Andy Roddick Foundation initiatives are global, as we learned, reaching all the way to Australia.
“It’s people like Andy Roddick that help make a difference - who help the ones in need,” the Sydney native tells us. “It helps today’s medicine on the market, for us all around the world living with this disease, have a much better life and not let it beat us and not be a death sentence no more, as it once was. If there were more Andy Roddicks in this world I’m sure we would get a cure for this disease and other incurable diseases that we have.”
This brave Aussie’s determination and fighting spirit is an inspiration to all of us here at AR.com, and he, in acknowledgment, is very grateful for the time and effort committed by Andy and the volunteers in his foundation. “He is not just a champion in tennis, he is a champion in his support for charity.”
