They say everything is big in Texas. True to that tradition, last night Andy and compatriot Taylor Dent produced big serves, big laughs and surely big memories for the 4500 in attendance at the inaugural FedEx Texas Tennis Shootout in Frisco.

Although the competition was light hearted, Andy did take the “W” 6-4, 6-4. But the evening was more about entertaining the Texas crowd than the scoreboard. “In a relaxed atmosphere, it gives us a little more of a chance to let our personalities shine through to the crowd,” Andy told reporters. “We like that interaction, and it gives us a chance to have a little fun, too.”

Andy did not waste any time to start having fun. After the first point, a loud fan articulated his disbelief that Andy couldn’t get to any of Taylor’s shots. To make a point, Andy invited him to the court, handed him his racket, and gave the boisterous fan a chance to return Taylor’s giant serve. After the failed attempt, the fan let Andy resume the game with little interruptions.

In addition to entertaining, Andy used last night as a platform to educate proper tennis etiquette. After spotting a fan on a cellphone early in the match, Andy called him out onto the court to do a round of push-ups. Needless to say, cell phones were quickly turned off after that. Able to make fun of both himself and his tennis idols, Andy also gave some great impressions of John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Andre Agassi.

Taylor and Andy’s friendship fueled some interesting banter as well. After one point, Taylor even walked across the net to give Andy a hug. As accomplished products of junior tennis circuit, both Taylor and Andy were eager to participate in the event that promoted tennis at various levels. In a gesture of his commitment, Andy donated 100% of his player appearance fee to help sponsor the ITF Junior Tennis Circuit.

Between the big serves, big laughs, and big memories, it was clear that the FedEx Texas Tennis Shootout was a big success!
