As part of a special feature on AR.com, we are looking at the responsibilities and duties Team Roddick members face on a day to day basis. This article profiles a fundamental person in Team Roddick, Andy’s agent, Ken Meyerson.
Ken is the President of the SFX tennis division and serves a number of players on both the ATP and WTA tour, including Andy Roddick, Fernando Gonzalez, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Elene Bovina. However for Ken, Andy related work takes up a large portion of his day. “I spend about 30% of my entire day working on Andy Roddick business. Whether that’s existing sponsors, new sponsors, tournament directors, the ATP, family members, Foundation, Website. Suffice to say…it’s never boring. The rest of my day is either with other clients or managing our divisional business,” Ken explains.
So where in the world is Ken Meyerson? Ken is based in the SFX offices in Coconut Grove, Miami and spends “seven to eight hours” working in the offices there. He added, “I have really no specific times regarding office hours. But on a typical day 9:45am to 5:45pm….normal hours.” What Ken did not mention is that his office hours may be normal, but leaving the office does not mean leaving work. He often says, “I am available by cell phone even while in the shower!” This may sound like a light-hearted comment, but Team Roddick know that this is a fact.
Ken’s day is divided between the time he spends in meetings, and communicating via phone or email. When asked how much time he is attached to his laptop or phone Ken replied, “all day!” When he is in meetings with sponsors Ken explained that they discuss “Mostly appearances…sponsors pay Andy and they obviously want things in return. Coordinating logistically is a big part of how we spend our time.”
Ken’s job also requires flexibility with traveling. He does occasionally travel to tournaments and enjoys having the opportunity to watch Andy play. When he isn’t watching his client pound opponents, Ken spends his time at tournaments in more meetings. “Outside the office I usually have meetings with off-court sponsors or Tournament Directors.”
When we asked Ken if he could sum up his job description, he simply said, “service related”. It is clearly a service which is greatly appreciated by Andy, and he expresses this in his testimonial on the SFX web site:
“I’m psyched to continue working with SFX. Through my relationship with Ken Meyerson and his team, I have been able to focus on tennis knowing that my interests are being looked after. That’s the type of management all athletes should have.”
Thanks to Ken for taking time to talk to Ar.com and stay tuned to AR.com for more about Team Roddick!
