In the December 2005 edition of the British tennis magazine, ACE, the feature story and front cover picture is none other than our own Andy Roddick! ‘Andy’s Rocky Road’ or ‘Boy Meets World’, both titles introduce the article that focuses on how difficult it is to remain at the top of the men’s tennis tour.
The article compliments Andy’s work ethic and the way he conducts himself off-court with the media. Joel Drucker, the author, sympathizes with Andy over the expectations of the American fans and TV networks to perform well. He also compares the differences of the super star status received by Tim Henman in England to the “low grade” celebrity status a tennis player receives in a country the size of America.
Drucker compares the coaching strategies of Brad Gilbert and Dean Goldfine, but also highlights the respect between the two coaches. ACE also notes Andy’s charisma and therefore has a good mixture of on-court and off-court photos, including one of Andy looking rather dashing at the ESPY awards
Andy and Wimbledon go hand in hand as Andy has had much success at ‘The Championships’ the past three years. ACE and the British tennis fans are confident that this young, charismatic American will continue to perform well on the grass of England.
Targets, ambitions and work ethics aside, Andy is humbled by his opportunities. “You’ve got to admit this is rather ridiculous to live the kind of life that gives me the chance to play a sport I love, make good money, and meet all sorts of famous and interesting people.”
Fans in England can buy ACE at any major news stands, or you can subscribe to ACE via the LTA. December’s edition also features an interview with Sebastien Grosjean, and an article on the battle for the British no.1 spot between Henman, Rusedski and Murray.
