USTA picks La Jolla club for Davis Cup first round - Tennis - Yahoo! Sports
The club was selected Monday by the U.S. Tennis Association. The matches are Feb. 10-12.
The California club plans to build a temporary hard court and stadium on a pitch-and-putt golf course. It’s the first time since 1996 that the San Diego area will host the Davis Cup.
“We know we’re going to play in front of some of the most knowledgeable tennis fans in the world,” U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said. “Our guys are committed to doing everything they can to win the Cup this year.”
The United States last won the championship in 1995, the country’s longest drought since the 1930s.
Andy Roddick and the doubles team of twins Bob and Mike Bryan are expected to lead the U.S. team, which also could have U.S. Open semifinalist Robby Ginepri, James Blake or Taylor Dent.
The U.S. has won all five Davis Cup meetings against Romania, which should be led by Andrei Pavel and Victor Hanescu.
