Roddick Takes Lyon Title

In a decisive final, Andy topped french teen Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2 to win The Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon . All week Andy has commented on his confidence building with each “w” in Lyon, so it is only appropriate that he finished the week on top.

Andy had anticipated the final would be spirited, that Monfils would bring the same passion and tenacity Andy plays with. “He plays just like me. He’s very exciting, he’ll be pumped up and angry on the court and do his whole thing,” Andy predicted yesterday. “The more personality we show the better.”

Andy joked about several parallels between himself and Monfils, including a particular weapon. “I remember the first time I was watching him at Wimbledon last year and I saw this guy serve and I said “Who is that?” They said “He’s No.1 in Juniors.” I’d heard his name before but I’d never seen him play. I said “I’ve seen that serve before, it looks familiar… ,” Andy recalls.

The big personalities and the big serves did not disappoint in today’s final. Experience prevailed as Andy clinched the Lyon title before heading into the his final tournament of the season.
