With the traditional celebratory chest bump, the Bryan brothers sealed the victory over Belgium’s Oliver Rochus and Kristof Vliegen, 6-3, 6-7(2) 6-1, 6-3 to give USA a 2-1 lead. Battling the 2500 strong Belgium crowd and their cheer-sticks, Bob and Mike Bryan battled to a four set victory.
“It was a lot of fun,” Mike Bryan said after the match. “To come out on the road on dirt and take this one and give our team a 2-1 lead is pretty great. We love Davis Cup every time we step on the court. We throw in more chest bumps; we move our feet extra. So we’re excited right now.” And Captain Patrick McEnroe is betting Andy is excited as well.
“I think Andy is going to be very motivated,” said U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe. “He’s expecting a tough match, but he’s playing very well.”
In two hours and forty five minutes, the Bros handed the US squad a tremendous advantage heading into Sunday’s reverse singles matches. Now Andy will have the opportunity to clinch the Play-Off win rather than be forced to save the US from World Group elimination. Tomorrow the US team only needs one singles victory to secure their place in the World Group for 2006.
