Andy Vs. Christophe Rochus In Round One

U.S. number one, Andy Roddick, will take on Belgian number two, Christophe Rochus, in the second singles match on Friday afternoon. Andy will be looking to assist James Blake in getting the USA off to a good start in the tie, but it won’t be easy against the diminutive yet capable Belgians.

Although Christophe is slightly taller than younger brother, Olivier, he is still a good five inches off Andy’s 6′2″ frame. Height doesn’t always equate to an advantage, but it does influence the style of play. Patrick McEnroe certainly believes that this, coupled with the clay could be advantageous for the American squad. “Well, they’re (Olivier and Christophe) small. Sometimes the ball can get up high on them. I think on clay the ball can bounce up a bit higher than on a hard court. Maybe that’s a factor.”

Height aside, Andy also has a leading head to head record against C. Rochus. Their only meeting was last year in San Jose where Andy ran out a straight sets winner. Andy also has a far better Davis Cup record than Rochus. He has experienced the most vocal of vocal home crowds in Seville last year (another tie played on clay) and has a 15-6 win-loss record. Rochus on the other hand, has a 4-13 record and hasn’t won a Davis Cup match since last year against Zimbabwe in a Euro/African zone match.

Despite being favored in the match, Andy is aware of the Belgian’s abilities. Christophe Rochus has had some impressive clay court results this year, most notably reaching the semi finals of the Masters Series in Hamburg and also in St. Poelten. “By no means are we underestimating the Belgian team,” Roddick said. “We’re going to have to play very well to win this tie.”

James Blake and Olivier Rochus kick off proceedings Friday with a 2pm start (local time - 8pm Eastern) with Andy’s match immediately following.
