Pat McEnroe, who is Andy’s Davis Cup Captain, is more than a coach, he’s a true Andy fan. Ever since Andy join the team in 2001 for their match against Switzerland, McEnroe knew Andy was something special. “Andy just blasted the ball past the other guys in practice, he really caught my eye,” McEnroe explained when he sat down with Ar.com at the US Open.
McEnroe has watched Andy grow on and off the court and sees Andy continually maturing in the game. “Andy is very professional and is always improving.” Over the years, “Andy has grown physically stronger, improved his net game, and has great court movement for a guy his size.” Andy will be pleased to hear McEnroe’s compliments as Andy recently commented that he has been working very hard this past year to improve his overall game. His hard work has visibly paid off.
You may also know Pat McEnroe as one of the tennis commentators for CBS, who caught every point Andy played during the US Open Series. “Over the summer, Andy wanted to win points. But, that night (against Muller) he was playing a lot of deep baseline defense and seemed to be waiting for errors.” Since the upset, players and coaches alike have acknowledged that is the game of tennis, any given match, anyone is beatable. In his post match press conference, Andy noted, “I had a great week of practice…I wish I could go back four hours to play that match all over again.”
This first round loss made Pat put his pen to paper and start strategizing for Andy’s next Davis Cup appearance against Belgium in a few weeks. There wasn’t much to write, though, as Pat knew exactly where to tweak Andy’s game. “Andy needs to make changes in his game where his receives and where he rallies,” Pat said. “He should step up to the baseline more and bring back his offensive strategies.” By pulling these aspects into his game, Andy will gain the control he needs to mentally and physically outperform his opponents.
“Andy hates to lose. This loss will only make him hungrier to win,” Coach McEnroe concluded.
We can’t wait to see it! Go Andy!
