Despite the disappointing departure of America’s number one men’s player, Andy Roddick, in the first round at the US Open, the USA still has plenty to cheer about. There are still four American men left in the main event at Flushing Meadows and all are going strong. A rejuvenated James Blake powered into the third round under the lights on Arthur Ashe court last night thrilling the crowds. He has now set up a tantalising clash with Rafael Nadal.
Robby Ginepri, who is looking more impressive with every match, demolished Gilles Muller to book his place in round three and is looking very threatening in his quarter of the draw. The legendary Andre Agassi proved too tough for Ivo Karlovic as he edged through in three tie break sets, he will next face Tomas Berdych (CZE). Finally Taylor Dent is bidding to join his compatriots in round three today as he takes on Nicolas Almagro (ESP).
Not to be outdone the American ladies are making waves as they power through the draw. Venus Williams has looked especially impressive. This year’s Wimbledon champion has been at her best in crushing her first two opponents. She is joined in the third round by sister Serena, Laura Granville and number two seed Lindsay Davenport.
And don’t forget, if you want to double the fun, you can still catch the bouncing Bryan twins, the number two seeds in the men’s doubles. They face Lindstedt and Soderling of Sweden on the Grandstand court today.
Well done USA!
