After a lengthy search, we found Andy’s “Mojo”. Ar.com caught up with the man behind the Mojo, New York based comedian Nick Kroll, before Andy’s first round match this week. In addition to assuming the task of embodying Andy’s Mojo, Nick, originally from Rye, New York, performs weekly at comedy clubs, hosts a show, “Welcome to The Week” and can be spotted commentating on VH1.
Although Nick is a recreational tennis player, and fan since the days of Bjorn Borg, as of Tuesday night, he had never met Andy. While Andy and Mardy filmed their spots in Austin, Texas, Nick and the Mojo fleet hit New York City to film the various scenes. “The best part was filming on the Brooklyn Bridge at dawn,” he said. Nick, who since filming has died his hair blond to capture the “essence of the Mojo,” truly looked the part of an alter ego. Wearing a green ‘Mojo t-shirt,” flashy white boots, sequined belt, and standard cowboy hat, Nick was on hand at flushing meadows to cheer on his better half along with other members of the Mojo crew and Andy’s co-star and close pal, Mardy Fish.
Nick explained that being Andy’s Mojo could truly be a full time job. Since last week’s appearance on the Today Show, Nick and the AmEx Mojo crew have been participating in “random acts of Mojo,” through-out the city. The Mojo bought Broadway tickets for lucky fans at “Tickets, Tickets,” upgraded a guest at the Mandarin Oriental hotel, bought lunch for an entire restaurant, and only minutes before we met, Andy’s Mojo had treated a group of US Open ticket patrons to a round of drinks at the popular bar “Mojito” on-site at Flushing Meadows. Nick joked that he would send Andy the bill.
Andy’s American Express Mojo campaign received heavy attention this week. And although Andy’s US Open ended earlier than expected, the spirit, creativity and fan participation in the campaign highlights what makes the US Open so special each year.
