The Open Begins

In a classic first day at Flushing Meadows, there were dominating victories, upsets, thrilling five setters, and an opening ceremony that would give anyone goose bumps. This year, Andy was honored along with Kim Clijsters at the evening ceremony for finishing first in the US Open Series.

Promptly at 7:00 PM, the ceremony kicked off under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium with a phenomenal gospel choir. Joined by blues legend, Bo Diddley, the choir thrilled the crowd with inspirational music. The Current Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg welcomed the packed stadium to two fantastic weeks of tennis. Davis Cup Captain, Patrick McEnroe was on hand to give some background on how both Andy and Kim reached their titles. USTA President, Franklin Johnson awarded Andy with his US Open Series trophy.

Looking comfortable in his favorite jeans and a maroon Lacoste shirt, Andy greeted the crowd enthusiastically, “What’s up New York?” After the cheering subdued, Andy congratulated the USTA on creating the umbrella USOS that made it “easier for the fans to follow” tennis in the summer hard court season. After a quick “thank you” he was off to catch diner as he joked with McEnroe that his diner plans were interrupted for the ceremony.

Earlier in the day, Andy had a lengthy practice with Jurgen Melzer to the delight of many ticket patrons. After only twenty minutes, the size of the crowd had grown to surpass that of several match courts. Andy, Doug and Dean all joked around with the fans. Everyone, it appears, loves New York.

Go Andy, and Happy Birthday!
