The unthinkable has occurred. America’s tennis hero and former US Open Champion, Andy Roddick, has been eliminated from the 2005 US Open in the first round by Gilles Muller (LUX) in straight sets; 7-6(4), 7-6(8), 7-6(1).
The match began as business as usual with Andy serving for the first set 5-4. At that point Andy had registered zero unforced errors and it suddenly appeared as though Andy’s Mojo played a dirty trick on him. Missed first serves and unforced errors let Muller back in the match and from that point he managed to hit a phenomenal number of lines on both serves and ground strokes. It was competition at the highest level.
As quoted from a similar upset from the women’s first round “Things like this happen.”
