Tonight at 8pm, Andy will play Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) on Center Court in the quarterfinals. Youzhny is 2-1 over Andy defeating him once in 2001 and in once in 2002. Their third meeting was at the Australian Open in 2003, and Andy won in 5 sets. With a two month age difference, two inch spread in height, and two years since their last meeting, this should prove to be a very interesting contest.
Youzhny’s singles record this year has more losses than wins, even though he started 2005 at his highest ATP ranking at 15. Currently he is 52, however, this doesn’t weigh heavily on Andy’s mindset for this match. Andy commented in his courtside post-match interview that he knows what Youzhny can do. “He’s tough,” Andy noted. “He always tries to be the aggressor. He’s pretty flashy as a shot-maker, so I’ll definitely have my hands full.”
After Andy’s match against Chela yesterday, Andy commented on his serving in Cincinnati. “I’ve tried to serve with a little bit more authority (today). I felt like I needed to become more aggressive. My aggression out there is my weapon.” In addition to his serve, Andy’s lightening-fast forehand and aggressive offense were also key factors in him moving into the quarters. Andy’s become very solid this week and his game is growing tremendously.
Tune in tonight on ESPN2 at 8pm to see what other tactics Andy has up his Lacoste sleeve.
