If you couldn’t stay up until 3am to watch Andy’s match on delay, now’s your chance to get an in depth recap of the phenomenal 2 hour-9minute, double-tie-break three-setter in a 2003 US Open finals rematch. “The Mosquito,” came out quickly and in attack mode. He was buzzing all over the court hitting 40 winners for the night, but it was not enough to counter Andy’s powerful serve. After playing a “backwards match” against Jurgen Melzer, as Andy called it, he found his serve and everything fell into place from there, including much roaring and fist-pumping.
Ar.com was able to get in touch with Andy’s coach, Dean Goldfine, late last night. “The match was high quality tennis. Juan Carlos served incredibly well through the first 2 sets. Andy came up with some big serves when he had to.” Andy hit 15 aces for the night, one reaching 142 mph. “After playing a great second set tie-breaker, Andy finally broke Ferrero’s serve in the second game of the third set. Andy started controlling points with his forehand and did a great job of finishing points at the net,” noted Coach Dean. Andy won the break with a backhand volley and never looked back.
Today’s opponent, Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG) was in the top ten with Andy in 2002 and ranked as high as number 7. His is currently ranked number 36. The two have faced off five times, with Chela winning only the first match in 2002. They most recently met in Washington DC where Andy went on to take home the title for the second time. For their sixth meeting today, they will be playing on Center Court not before 1:00 pm (Eastern), following the Hewitt/Ancic match.
Here are some more statistics on Chela:
