Andy Upset In Montréal

Andy was defeated in Montréal by John-Henri Mathieu of France in straight sets, 5-7, 3-6 this evening. It was an interesting match with Andy playing defense the majority of the time. The statistics also were in favor of Mathieu, as he out aced Andy.

The game started even until Andy broke Mathieu’s serve to take the lead at 3-2. Mathieu, however, responded immediately with a break. In his title run At the Legg Mason Tennis Classic last week, Andy was only broken once the entire tournament. Although Andy routinely clocked 130 and 140 mph serves tonight, Mathieu handled the serves well. The two were neck-and-neck at the end of the first set with Andy serving in hopes to bring it to a tiebreak, but Mathieu didn’t't let it go to that. He took Andy’s service game and the set, 7-5. Obviously frustrated, Andy tried to regain his concentration heading into the second set.

As the second set began, Mathieu held his serve but Andy double faulted game point to give Mathieu yet another lead at 0-2. This next game was frustrating for Andy, who was aced three times, giving an unrecoverable lead to Mathieu, 0-3.

Getting a second wind, Andy broke out his powerful 1-2 punch offense as well as his improved volleying. This brought Andy back to 2-3. Andy had an opportunity to break the next game, but Mathieu served for the win and took the lead 2-4. There were few opportunities to save the match after that. Mathieu served out the set at 5-3 to take the unexpected win.
