With the sweltering summer heat in D.C, matches do not begin at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic until 4:00 PM. Like all other tournaments the match schedule is stacked one after another, sometimes with a “not before” time for television broadcast and ticket purposes.
For Andy, “Third On” translates to being ready to go at any time. Tonight, Andy is slotted to play ‘not before 7:00 PM’, but the two preceding matches could be three set tie-breaker marathons or roll over bagels. As a result, Andy, Coach Dean Goldfine, and trainer Doug Spreen have to keep a lenient schedule on site.
Today Andy will hit at 3:30 in preparation for tonight’s match and depending on the evenings events, he may jump on a court again before taking on Giovanni Lapentti.
