Following his 60th career title at the Mercedes-Benz Cup on Sunday, Andre Agassi withdrew from the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C. Andre, who was the 2nd seed, has been replaced by a very lucky loser, Sebastien De Chaunac.
After Andre defeated Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 6-4, 7-5 to capture his fourth Mercedes-Benz Cup title, he notified Legg Mason’s tournament Director, Jeff Newman, of the decision. In a letter faxed Sunday night, Andre said, “Over the years, I have been privileged to be a part of the Legg Mason. However, at this point in my career I have to be extremely selective about the amount of matches that I play in preparation of the U.S. Open.”
Andre’s withdrawal leaves Andy as the only American seeded player. Andy faces the winner of Giovanni Lapentti and Nicolas Mahut, who play today at 4:00 PM on Stadium Court. Andy has never faced either player, so we suspect Dean Goldfine will be doing some research this afternoon. Tomorrow, Andy will face either Lapentti or Mahut, 3rd on Stadium after 4:00 PM, Eastern.
