Double Downer For Andy

As previously reported, Andy’s pursuit of a three-peat at the RCA championships ended yesterday when he was upset by fellow American, Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-7(2), 5-7 in the quarterfinals. This is the first win by Ginepri in seven meetings with Andy.

Later that day, Andy notified the tournament directors at the Mercedes Benz Cup in Los Angeles that he was withdrawing due to soreness in his right knee. This was not a happy moment for Andy or the tournament where he would have been the number one seed, a spot that will be filled by Andre Agassi, who has been hampered by his own injury issues.

Andy said, “After consulting with my coach and trainer, we feel that it is critical that I have some recovery time.” Recovery time is extremely limited due to the intense schedule of the US Open Series culminating at the US Open in August. Considering what is at stake, team Roddick made this logical, yet disappointing decision.

About the intensity of the schedule, Andy commented, “This is ridiculous, the schedule we’re expected to play, year in and year out,” he said. “The last two years, I overcame it; this year, I didn’t.”

Now ar.com is asking all you Andy fans to send your quick recovery vibes Andy’s way so he returns to the US Open Series to resume his tune up and go after the title at the US Open.

Go Andy!
