Andy’s pursuit of a three-peat at the RCA championships ended early today when he was upset by fellow American, Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-7(2), 5-7 in the quarterfinals.
In the first set Andy broke Ginepri at 3 all and held serve to take the set in a timely fashion, 6-4. With little room for compromise, the two held serve in the second. As if Andy had not played enough tie-breaks this week, Ginepri forced him to a second-set tiebreak and steamed through the breaker (7-2), evening the match at a set a piece.
In a tight third set Andy was broken at 3 all but immediately broke back to even the set. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, Andy had match points at 5-4, but a resilient Ginepri refused to give in. Ginepri broke Andy at 5 all and took the set 7-5. This is the first time that Ginepri has beaten Andy in a total of seven meetings.
Next up on Andy’s US Open Series adventure is Los Angeles and the Mercedes-Benz Cup.
