Andy Into Round 3

In what seemed more like a final round match, Andy held off a resilient Dmitry Tursunov to reach the third round at the RCA Championships this evening.

After the two stubbornly held serve, Andy took the first set in a tie break. The second set started much the same with a battle of the big serves, neither player willing to give in. The second set tie break did not go Roddick’s way, and Tursunov evened the match at a set a piece.

Andy was broken early in the third as Tursunov took the lead 2-0, but fought back to even the set two all. The third set was a brilliant display of both patience and determination as Andy was forced into a third consecutive tie-break. Eventually Tursunov, who saved two match points in the breaker, was unable to tame Roddick. Andy took the tie-break and the match 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 7-6(5). Tursunov hit 51 winners to Andy’s 32 but made 71 unforced errors to Andy’s 51.

Andy will next face the winner of Xavier Malisse (BEL)(15)vs. Noam Okun (ISR).
