In beautiful weather at SW19 Andy Roddick advanced to the quarter finals for the third year in a row. To get there he beat Guillermo Coria 6-3, 7-6(1),6-4 in a close match. The Argentinean Coria is better known for his exploits on clay but today he transferred his game nicely to grass, which has had the feel of a hard court under the present conditions, and gave Andy a good test.
In the first set both players had a good look at each others’ serves and Andy had at least one breakpoint in each of Coria’s service games. With all these chances Andy broke twice to seal the first set 6-3.
It was a match where Andy volleyed to great effect. In sets 2 and 3 it was this shot that worked well for Andy, bringing his camp to their feet. After exchanging breaks with Coria in set 2 it was decided on a tiebreak which Andy stormed 7-1. He pumped himself up a with a big “Yeah!” took a two set lead.
In the third set both players again inflicted damage on each others’ serves and exchanged breaks. The highlight of the set came when Coria framed a return which headed to the waiting hand of Dean Goldfine up in the stand. However with the pressure of the crowd on him, Dean fumbled the catch and it is unlikely that the England cricket team will be enlisting his services this summer! Andy served for the match at 5-4 having broken Coria’s serve. He finished emphatically with an ace to take him into a quarter final meeting on Wednesday with Sebastien Grosjean (FRA).
