Under glorious sunshine at SW19 Andy began his Wimbledon campaign in fine form against Jiri Vanek. Having practised for half an hour with Tommy Haas earlier on, Andy started well and raced to a 6-1 first set in no time at all. Andy was rallying well, forcing Vanek into a lot of errors.
However in the second set Vanek offered more resistence. After exchanging breaks the set went to a tie break. Andy played a superb tie break and won it 7-4 with a great backhand volley to seal it.
It was business as usual in the third set. Andy was using his backhand slice very effectively and also experimented with some serve and volleying. A brilliant forehand pass down the line secured the first break for him in the set and he raced to a 4-0 lead as he hit an unreturnable serve after breaking Vanek again. He served out the match at 5-2 with two monster serves to finish.
Andy will next face Bracciali of Italy in the second round at the Championships, that match will take place on Thursday. The two have never met before on the ATP tour and this is somewhat of a surprise encounter as Bracciali defeated heavily favoured, 6′10, Ivo Karlovic 12-10 in the fifth set in round one.
