Watched by Team Roddick in the persons of Dean Goldfine, Doug Spreen and Ken Meyerson, Andy defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to progress into the 2nd round of the French Open.
The 20 year old frenchman gave Andy a good solid workout on the red clay There was an exchange of breaks in the first set, then with the score at 4-3 Andy regained the advantage held his own serve and took the first set 6-3.
Andy took an early lead in the second set which he never surrendered, despite falling over mid-point and recovering to win the point and the game. He broke the young Frenchman’s serve again before holding his own serve at love and taking the second set 6-2
The third set was very competitive with Andy surviving break points in three of his service games as Tsonga played some of his best tennis. The experience of Andy proved too much and he took the 3rd set and the match.
There was a warm handshake and some encouraging words from Andy at the net before he left the court, signing autographs on his way.
Andy can be very pleased with his performance today. Tsonga is a very good young player who is now making his way on the main tour. He is a very good clay court player who pushed Andy all the way in the final set.
Andy will play Argentinian Jose Acasuso in the next round.
